Seasonal Tips
Spring months are a good time to start a lawn care program.
Depending on condition, taking care of your yard and garden can sometimes seem like a full-time job. Educating yourself on professional lawn care can save you time, money and hard work. Following a few spring lawn tips can help get your lawn in shape and allow you the time to relax and enjoy your outdoor surroundings.
Raking
Regular raking is an essential step in keeping your lawn healthy and flourishing. Raking not only removes any debris from the surface but also promotes air circulation between the blades of grass and into the crown of the plants. This can prevent the development of fungus that can damage your lawn and kill the grass. Use a hard-tine rake between mowing and always rake when your lawn is dry.
Mowing
Your first cut of the spring should leave your grass roughly 2 inches long, and you should maintain this length throughout the springtime months. During the summer increase the length by about a half an inch. Doing this will enhance vigorous top growth while the roots are growing beneath the soil.
Fertilization
Over fertilizing promotes weed infestation.Fertilizers not only promote grass growth but encourage weed growth as well. Over fertilizing your lawn can be counterproductive as weeds become stronger and healthier and begin to build up throughout your yard or garden. Over fertilizing can also cause diseases in the grass that will result in a discolored and patchy lawn. Use fertilizers sparingly in the spring.
